Happy Monday, everyone! I have debated whether to resurrect my old Mercer’s Mondayitis column for some time, and I finally decided that it returns next week!
What is Mercer’s Mondayitis?
Over eight years ago, I wanted to start writing a regular article to add to my portfolio and was inspired after reading Bill Simmons’ old Page 2 columns for ESPN when I couldn’t sleep. I am a big fan of Simmons and what he has built at The Ringer, and I’m hoping to create something similar myself.
The other inspiration for the page was the Daily Telegraph’s Sports Confidential lift out in its Sunday paper. I have been reading the Daily Telegraph sports section from a very early age, and I still enjoy their coverage.
After building up the weekly article, I got a regular gig writing about the men’s lifestyle website Hello Sir. Unfortunately, the Hello Sir owner decided to shut down the site, so Mercer’s Mondayitis went back to my other website.
What will you be covering this time around
Initially, I covered various sports, including A-F-L, Rugby League, Rugby Union, and Combat Sports. I also wanted to pay homage to a sports show I watched called ‘Sports Tonight’ by incorporating the ‘Play of the Weekend’, which picked out a highlight reel moment from one of the various codes.
First, I will cover only the sports that Game On Oz covers, but as the site grows, there will be plenty of room to expand. At this stage, I won’t add any pop culture unless it somehow fits in with the sport played over the weekend.
What are you hoping for with Mercer’s Mondayitis?
First, I want to post consistently and get as many eyes on it as possible, including all the sports Game On Oz covers. I will then look at ways to expand possibly into a video podcast or maybe as a a live stream, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
So, next week, Mercer’s Mondayitis will officially be back, baby!
